Word in The Well: Why Should I read Scripture?

Have you ever encountered situations in your life where you’ve wondered: “How do I even make sense of this?” Or in the face of making a decision, thought: “what’s the right thing to do here? What would Jesus say about this?….Why is Jesus so silent in my life?”

Often, we turn to so many different means to find and listen to God’s voice in our lives. Yet, we tend to overlook the great gift that has been given to us: Scripture.

In the Letter to the Hebrews, St Paul tells us, “In the past God spoke to our ancestors… at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by his Son… sustaining all things by his powerful word.” (Heb 1:1-3)

It is through Scripture that Jesus desires to communicate to us, in an altogether personal and particular way. Scripture is meant to guide us along the right path, console us in dark times, and to continually remind us of the end in which we were made for.

When we take up the habit of prayerfully reading Scripture daily, we actually allow Jesus to speak more and more clearly in our lives. For Scripture is not merely a biography of Jesus’ life, but it contains Him: “The Sacred Scriptures contain the Word of God and, because they are inspired, they are truly the Word of God” (DV 24).

When we read Scripture, it isn’t just conveying Truth, it is also to enter and deepen our relationship with Him.

At first glance, we may be quick to think of the physical and natural aspect of death. Yet, the call of Christ also entails dying to self – surrendering the desires, the habits and lifestyles that prevent us from following and loving Him.
